Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a comprehensive martial art that teaches self defense against aggressors whether they are striking, kicking or wrestling. We focus on teaching BJJ grappling techniques to subdue opponents without using punches or kicks. This method empowers students to not only maximize their defensive capability against a bigger and stronger opponent, but also the confidence in choosing a less violent solution. As a result, we believe that our students are better equipped both mentally and physically to handle any potential physical attack without resorting to the more violent approach of using strikes. BJJ is especially beneficial to kids and females where technique must be used to gain an advantage over larger, stronger opponents.
There are many reasons to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:

Decide what class is right for you. Kids start at 7 years old and to about 125 lbs. Some exceptions are made on age and size. Call or text with questions.
Arrive 20 minutes before class and sign a waiver. Anyone under 18 must have their parent or legal guardian sign a waiver AT Tutaj BJJ. All Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are taught in the gi. No gi is allowed during drilling and rolling, open mats and self defense.
It is mandatory to wear a tight fitting tshirt or rashguard under the uniforms, called gis or kimonos. We have plenty of loaner gis in most sizes for the trial class. You can also purchase new gis and rashguards at Tutaj BJJ. No wrestling shoes, hard head gear, or cup allowed. Also bring a lock to put your things in the locker room and sandals to wear from the locker room to the mat area.
Tight fitting clothing is recommended for the self defense class.
At Tutaj Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, we combine Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, often called Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into one fluid art. We teach Wrestling and Judo takedowns, and BJJ and Wrestling for groundwork. Students are then given the chance to combine everything they have learned in live training and open mat.
Where else in Chicago can you train with a grappler who has:
- 22 years of experience
- 310 competition matches
- 29 championships
and is constantly testing moves in competitions to ensure that they will work in live situations.

Tutaj is my last name. Contrary to popular belief, it isn't pronounced anywhere near how it is spelled. It is pronounced like "too tie" [too-tahy]. Also, tutaj is Polish for "here" and an example pronunciation is at the following link:
